The unit plan that I am thinking of doing is for the high school’s unit on heredity. The topics that need to be covered are meiosis, genetic disease, Punnett squares, and probability. I want to introduce the topics through the use of PowerPoint presentations and workshop activities, to break up the block period. Once students have a better understanding of the concepts, I will do projects and labs to reinforce what they have learned. Some of the labs and projects that are required include a coin flip lab and family pedigree project. Students will be assessed based on class work done during the workshops and projects and labs that they will complete during class time and on their own.
The first couple days would be the introduction of meiosis, with activities incorporated with each lesson. Then the next couple of days would be focused on genetic disease and how they get inherited. To follow up on those lessons, the family pedigree project would be done. The last set of lessons would include Punnett squares and probability, which inclusion of the coin flip lab. On the last day of the unit, the unit test would be given to assess what the students have learned.
